Statement of the Chavchavadze Center in connection with the 31st anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall fell 31 years ago today. For almost three decades the Wall was a civilizational frontier between liberty and totalitarianism, between the good and the evil. We congratulate our German friends and citizens of the free world with this remarkable day! Unfortunately, the demolition of the Berlin Wall is not complete. The “Iron Curtain” still divides us in Abkhazia, the Tskhinvali region, Crimea, Donbas, Transnistria, and other areas. The Wall remains in place while contract killers continue to murder political opponents in European cities and while there still is a political force that believes that the dissolution of the country which built the Berlin Wall was the “greatest geopolitical disaster” of the XX century. Most importantly, the fall of the Berlin Wall is not complete in the minds of many people. The main challenge of our generation is to overcome this barrier, which is the ultimate impediment on our road to freedom and prosperity.
