Statement of the Chavchavadze Center Regarding June 20

Exactly one year has passed since practically every segment of Georgian society has finally seen the real face of Ivanishvili’s oligarchic government.

Although the policy of appeasement has been evident in many cases, hosting Russian MP Gavrilov and offering him the seat of the Chairman of the Georgian Parliament turned out to be a personal insult for many citizens of our country. What had been a controversial topic for many until then, has become a self-evident truth since June 20, 2019, including, as it appears, in the eyes of international community.

June 20 marked the first time since April 9, 1989, that a government loyal to Russia dispersed protesters fighting for the dignity and freedom of Georgia on Rustaveli Avenue. This day has shown to the world that the policy of unilateral concessions towards occupying power sold as “pragmatic maneuvering” is a red line that the Georgian public will never accept.
